Vanity Fair’s Scoop Leaked
Somebody let the cat out of the bag for Conde Nast’s Vanity Fair. The magazine supposedly had the scoop on Lance Armstrong’s professional return to cycling, but couldn’t keep the juicy secret under wraps. Somehow, cycling magazine VeloNews ran the story on Monday. In response to the leak, Vanity Fair quickly posted the interview online and pulled the story from its November print edition. The upside to the drama is that the online interview helped Vanity Fair double its normal web traffic on Wednesday. However, the Armstrong story doesn’t come close to the magazine’s story about Cindy McCain’s $300,000 convention wardrobe or to last season’s semi-nude photos of Miley Cyrus. Surprise, surprise…corruption in politics and teenage nudity trump the story about a guy getting back on his bike. Silcon Alley Insider (Sept. 10, 2008)
