UK Afternoon Newspaper Using Accepting Smart Card Payments at Newsstands
January 14th, 2008
The Evening Standard, an afternoon daily, that has seen its circulation drop in recent years, is now accepting smart card payments at the newsstand, as a convenience measure for passers-by without the requisite 50 pence in their pockets. The paper’s Eros Card, which employs the same “near-field communications” technology as some mass transit systems, can be purchased via the internet and offers shoppers declining prices with increased purchases. The program is part of the newspaper’s effort to compete with London’s afternoon “freesheets.” International Herald Tribune (Jan. 14, 2008)
