Since entering the App business in May, Condé Nast is reporting 242,000 digital downloads of its eight available titles, which include Allure, Glamour, Golf Digest, GQ, Self, The New Yorker, Wired, and Vanity Fair. This number includes digital subscriptions, single copy purchases, and print subscribers who chose to add digital additions to their packages. This last group consists of 136,000 subscribers.

Monica Ray, executive vice president of consumer marketing with Condé Nast says, “…while this represents a small portion of our subscription circulation, we find it increasingly promising, especially given the short time we have been marketing subscriptions.” (Aug. 2) Folio

Niche magazines are aggressively growing in India’s media industry. One possible explanation is that Indian media laws restrict foreign equity to 26% in the news segment, but allow 100% foreign equity in non-news and non-current affairs speciality magazines. “Foreign publications can have more on-the-ground reporting on the international scene. An Indian magazine doesn’t have the resources or infrastructure to do this sort of thing,” says Radhakrishnan Nair, publisher and editor of Man’s World. Some international niche publications are able to score exclusive interviews with Indian celebrities. Many publishers are realizing that niche publications are where it’s at. In the past few years, FHM, Scientific American, Good Housekeeping, TimeOut, and Maxim have been among those to launch Indian editions. Additionally, Rolling Stone and Condé Nast’s Glamour are planning to launch Indian editions in 2008. LiveMint (WSJ) (2/25/08).
