Smith Named New President of Texas Monthly

Evan Smith, former editor and executive vice president of Texas Monthly, has been promoted to president, following the retirement of the magazine’s founder and publisher, Michael Levy. During Smith’s tenure as editor, Texas Monthly has been nominated for 14 National Magazine Awards, including winning the Ellie award for general excellence in 2003. Smith expects to take over as president in September.

Newsweek Publisher Leaves Magazine

Greg Osberg, the president and worldwide publisher of Newsweek, is leaving the company in the early fall. Osberg said, “I’ve made it no secret that I have a passion for the digital space and I’ve always wanted to return there.” While no successor has been named yet, Jon Meacham, the magazine’s editor, is the early front runner. Leonard Downie Jr. announced yesterday that he is stepping down from his position as executive editor at The Washington Post. Downie’s departure will end his 17-year tenure with the paper and he plans to become a Post Co. vice president at large, a title also held by his predecessor as editor, Ben Bradlee. After months of searching for a successor to executive editor Len Downie, The Washington Post is allegedly looking towards New York Times deputy managing editor Jonathan Landman. Though Landman will not confirm or deny this, a source with knowledge of the search process says that Landman met with Downie in Washington on June 13^th and that he may be interested in the job. Greg Ip Joins The Economist

Greg Ip, former Wall Street Journal Federal Reserve reporter, is leaving the WSJ to become U.S. economics editor for The Economist. His new responsibilities at The Economist will include writing and reporting on the U.S. economy and economic policy, as well as covering the Federal Reserve. Dan Lyons — “Fake Steve Jobs” — Set to Join Newsweek

Dan Lyons, the veteran Forbes tech editor who blogs under the pseudonym “Fake Steve Jobs” has been lured away and hired by Newsweek. Lyons is the first significant hire since the massive layoffs by Newsweek and will take over as the tech editor. Lyons will officially join Newsweek on Aug. 1 and his alter ego, “Fake Steve Jobs” will come with him and blog in some capacity. NY Times (June 13, 2008)

Power Shifts At LA Times Magazine

The Los Angeles Times, is planning on transferring control of its magazine from the newsroom to its business operations as well as replacing the magazine’s entire editorial staff, according to two executives at the paper. The plan was set in motion a few months ago when a new editor was hired, but kept a secret from everyone in the newsroom. Editor of Harvard Business Review Resigns

Former editor and managing director of Harvard Business Review, Thomas A. Stewart, announced his resignation on Friday, ending his 6 year tenure with the the magazine. A spokesperson for HBR said that Stewart left for “personal reasons” and they are now actively searching for a replacement. Folio (June 6, 2008)
