Surplus Grocers See Double Digit Sales Increases

Amid current worries about the health of the economy, surplus grocers — purveyors of closeouts, scratch-and-dent cans and out-of-date food products — are racking up sales gains. Amelia’s, a Pennsylvania surplus chain with 11 stores, saw its sales jump 17% from 2006 to 2007. Across the country, an executive at Grocery Outlet Inc., a 131-location operator based in Berkeley, California, said, “We see a lot of new faces we haven’t seen before … People are feeling poorer right now.” The Wall Street Journal (Feb. 22, 2008) Paid subscription may be required.
