Beadwork covers just about everything in beading — including the hot new trend of Steampunk. The “punk” indeed refers to a sense of individuality and nonconformity, while “steam” presumably refers to a steamer trunk. Here, in an article by Melanie Brooks Lukacs, beginning on page 58, is how Brooklyn-based artist Andrew Thornton explains the trend, “The soul of Steampunk is a combination of nostalgia and rebellion. It captures moments long since past and imagines universes of possibility when options are limited. This ability to recall the past as well as generate the future is an ideal inspiration of the artist or craftsman.”
