Si Newhouse and Magazines The Condé Way…
Lengthy piece in the Sunday NYT about whether Condé Nast’s highly successful — if at times quirky — business practices will serve it well in the years ahead. The publisher seems less perturbed than its competitors about the changes that might loom in an increasingly digital future, but just how much longer can the market for luxury goods advertising defy gravity? Among the interesting tid-bits: Chairman Si Newhouse makes a habit of counting ad pages in his and competitors’ magazines by hand, and some executives back in the free-spending 90’s might not have known how to read a budget spreadsheet, even it doing so had been required of them.
