Publishers Switching From Paper Catalogs to E-Catalogs
HarperCollins announced plans on Monday to make their seasonal catalog listings available online only. Jane Friedman, president of HarperCollins, said “It’s such a waste of paper and so inefficient.” She said the switch would likely begin by summer ‘09 and take place slowly. About 100,000 catalogs are sent out for each publishing season: summer, winter, and fall; and many are thrown right into the trash. Friedman notes that besides saving money and paper, online catalogs can be updated instantly with changes in prices and cover art. She said their online catalog will feature links to reviews, interviews, audio excerpts, and promotional video. Other major publishers, like Penguin Group (USA) and Random House Inc. are planning similar moves. InYork - a York, PA news site (May 13, 2008)
