Prediction: Magazine Shakeout to Continue in ‘08

December 11th, 2007

Writing in Media Life, Lisa Snedeker catalogs the magazine trade’s difficulties in the past year — fewer new title launches, tighter funding for launches, and an almost-certain, year-over-year decline in ad pages.  Then, there are the closures of some well-known and even venerable titles, including: Business 2.0, Life, Child, Premiere, Stuff and House & Garden.  Snedeker suggests that the industry changed, more than recovered, after the 2001 ad page recessioin.  The rising tide no longer lifted all ship and many, general interest titles were, instead, taking on water.  In 2008, she predicts a continuation of the title shakeout, plus: continued shedding of low-quality circ., more regional magazines, continuing efforts to change the way advertising is sold (as when Time publisher Ed McCarrick pitched audience over circ.) and better web integration.  Media Life  (Dec. 10, 2007)
