Rumor has it that after Newsweek editor Tina Brown saw the controversial Time cover of a mother breastfeeding her 3-year-old, she laughed and said, “Let the games begin.” Not to be outdone, the Newsweek editors were able to come up with an idea that created even more buzz and discussion as Time’s: a cover featuring an image of Obama with a rainbow halo over his head, in support of gay marriage. The headline reads “The First Gay President.”
And so a controversy is born… While many argue that the statement is misleading, Poynter News believes that “Newsweek’s cover is provocative, fun to riff about, and flag in the ground that says print journalism still matters. Kinda makes you hope the games continue, doesn’t it?” We’re taking Poynter’s side on this one.
