LA Times to Relaunch Magazine
Despite internal objections, LA Times prepares to launch LA, the newspaper’s monthly magazine. LA Times editor Russ Stanton said that the magazine “has lost money for years and is on track to post another significant loss in 2008.” But the Tribune Company, owner of LA Times, apparently backs the project 100%. LA will debut on September 7 and will be distributed only within the Sunday LA Times. In its previous form, the magazine was run by the newsroom, but the company recently gave control to the business operations staff and replaced the entire editorial staff. The launch signals “a serious intent to competitively engage in the Southern California Marketplace” - the Times says. Folio (July 28, 2008)
