Jon Friedman: ASME Awards are a Popularity Contest

The columnist goes out of his way to praise the quality of the nominees themselves, but he takes issue with the manner of dispensing nominations and selecting winners.  First, he says, titles should compete within groups based on editorial category, rather than circulation size.  His second claim is that the judges’ top priority appears to be politics, or spreading the kudos around among the industry’s top players.  Marketwatch  (Mar. 21, 2008)
