Israeli Ad for Women’s Empowerment Too Controversial for Ms. Magazine

January 10th, 2008

Ms. Magazine has long been a leader for the Women’s Movement.  The publication regularly supports women’s issues such as reproductive choice and religious freedom, and has done covers and stories of the most prominent and influential women around the globe.  However, Ms. Magazine recently denied publication of an American Jewish Congress advertisement which merely pictures three of the women in power in Israel; President of the Supreme Court Dorit Beinish, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni, and Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik.  The caption under their pictures reads “This is Israel.”  A Representative from Ms. Magazine said that the ad would “set off a firestorm” and that “there are very strong opinions” on the subject, “the subject” in question is unclear though.  The only conclusion that AJCongress can come up with that that Ms. Magazine is in favor of women’s empowerment, just not in Israel.  AJCongress believes that Ms. Magazine is worried about offending their readers with the nationality of the women pictured in the ad.  To view the ad in question, click hereCentre Daily (State College, PA) (01/10/08).
