HarperCollins to Post Full Text of Some Books on its Website
Web readers won’t be able to download the text to their laptops or electronic readers, like Amazon’s Kindle, and the print function also will be disabled. So, they will have to do their unlimited browsing there, on the website, in the same way that bookstore browsers can knock off a few chapters in those big easy chairs, while drinking lattes. Jane Friedman, chief executive of HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide believes that, “‘The best way to sell books is to have the consumer be able to read some of that content.’” In a similar move to encourage sampling, the publisher will also begin offering the first 20% of content for some titles on its website before the published books become available.
