Gulf Coast Prepares for Hurricane Ike Transporation Disruptions

Quebecor World News Flash - Issue #227 follows in its entirety:  Hurricane Ike Becomes Life-Threatening As It’s Set To Strike Texas Coast

As of 8 a.m. CDT, Ike was located about 230 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas, with maximum sustained winds near the center increased to 105 mph. A hurricane warning remains in effect from Morgan City, Louisiana, to Baffin Bay, Texas and tropical storm warnings are in effect for the southeast Louisiana and Mississippi coasts, including the city of New Orleans. The state government of Texas has issued a disaster declaration for 88 counties expected to be impacted by Hurricane Ike. Expect delays for any mail, newsstand and newspaper delivery routed through the affected area. Intermodal gate closures are expected throughout the state and any traffic destined into affected areas will be held short of their destinations until further notice. Due to evacuations, many terminals are closing along the 100 mile coastline including Galveston and low-lying Houston areas. At this time, the United States Postal Service is preparing facilities in the event of mandatory evacuations along the Texas Coast. The primary goals continue to be to ensure employee and customer safety, secure the mail and protect Postal facilities. Be advised that postal facilities located in areas where mandatory evacuations are in force will comply with the orders of local emergency management officials.

Louisiana - New Orleans
Cameron Parish is under mandatory evacuation and the Cameron and Hackberry Post Offices are closed until further notice. Cameron mail will be serviced by the Drew Post Office and Hackberry mail will be served by the Sulphur Post Office

Texas
Mandatory evacuations have been ordered today for the Greater Beaumont area (ZIP Codes 776 and 777); for the Greater South Houston area (ZIP Codes 775) and a small portion of the Greater West Houston area (ZIP Codes 774).

Mandatory evacuations are also in effect in the Aransas and Refugio Counties (ZIP Codes 779 and 783) forcing the closure of Post Offices in those counties today and tomorrow.

Brazoria County All Post Offices, including Alvin (77511), Brazoria (77422), Freeport (77541), and Pearland (77581)

Chambers County All Post Offices, including Baytown (77521) and Mont Belvieu (77580)

Matagorda County All Post Offices, including Bay City (77414)

Galveston County Galveston (77550), Baycliff (77518)

Jefferson County All Post Offices, including Beaumont (77704) and Port Arthur (77640)

Orange County All Post Offices, including Orange (77630)

Over The Road Conditions

Terminal closings are in effect in Beaumont/ Corpus Christi, Houston, Lake Charles La, and Victoria, TX.

Fed Ex Centers in Houston and Houston metro areas will be closing early on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, due to evacuations.

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) closed the State Highway 36 exits off U.S. 59 Thursday afternoon in order to allow evacuation traffic.
