Grocery Chains Getting: Greener, Healthier and More Like Department Stores

They are trying to entice health-concious customers back into the center aisles by stocking more SKUs without scary-sounding ingredients.  They are taking a page from the Motion Picture Association’s book, rating foods on their nutritional value.  They are, of course, appealing to shoppers’ growing interests in environmental sustainability — especially prevalent among the 40-60 set.  And they’re pimping their aisles with fancy lighting, piped-in aromas and Parisian-market-like displays in an effort to appeal to the iPOD-addicted, who complain that grocery shopping is “boring.”  Here is a round-up of some big trends in grocery retailing today.  The San Francicso Chronicle  (Jan. 27, 2008)
