European Publishers Fret as Men Flock to the Web

November 16th, 2007

Women’s reading habits haven’t changed so dramatically.  At UK-based Emap, women’s titles Closer, Grazia and Heat all turned in strong revenue performances in the first half of the year, but their contributions were undermined by slumping men’s titles, resulting in a 6 percent drop in magazine revenue.  Publishers Axel Springer in Germany Lagardere of France have observed similarly diverging trends based on gender in their magazines.  All of these publishers are wary of launches anywhere but in emerging markets and are giving even greater consideration of web-based content.  Reuters  (Nov. 15, 2007)
