Esquire’s Latest Cover Innovation in May

Esquire, once again, demonstrates that old-fashioned print media can be innovative, interactive, user-generated and just plain fun.

The May issue – on the topic of how to be a man – features three, “mix-and-matchable” covers of esteemed American men: Barack Obama, Justin Timberlake and George Clooney.  Inside are profiles of more than 60 other men that Esquire deems worth emulating, along with skills a man should have, indispensable things he should possess, and an essay on what it means to be a man.  Readers will pick up things here and there and put it all together, just like the composite cover…

The ad space on the backs of the interchangeable cover pages was purchased by The History Channel for Life After People television series, which uses the shifting images to particularly good, if unsettling, effect.  (We like our Earth with men and women, thank you very much.)

Esquire isn’t reinventing the printed magazine with its quirky covers over the past year.  But they are reminding us that there is plenty of life in it.  Let’s make sure shoppers get the message.
