Esquire Strives for “Smithsonian-Quality” Cover
Esquire has turned out lots of eye-catching, icononic covers during its 75-year run to date, and now Editor-in-chief David Granger (photo at L.) hopes to create another one. The September issue will feature battery-powered, flashing text, provided by E Ink, that says, “the 21st Century Begins Now.” The devices are being produced in China, inserted into the magazines in Mexico, and the final product is being shipped to Esquire’s Glazer, KY, distributor in refrigerated trucks to preserve battery life. Ford Motor company is helping underwrite the covers (which will appear only on the title’s 100,000-copy newsstand print run) by using it in an ad in the issue. Commenting on some of the logistical challenges of the electronic cover, Granger said, “We are trying to combine a 21st-century technology with a 19th-century manufacturing process.” The New York Times (July 21, 2008)
