Confection Confronts Sustainability Issues

February 8th, 2008

Mars and Nestle have joined The Good Inside Cocoa Programme, which was established by the Dutch non-profit organisation Utz Certified to develop a traceability system for cocoa farmers in the Ivory Coast.  The program aims to eliminate environmental and humanitarian problems such as child labour, deforestation and low salaries.  But it will also help protect supply from the country, which along with Ghana, accounts for 65% of the world’s cocoa, and thereby help maintain the industry’s high margins.  Food Navigator USA  (Feb. 7, 2008)
