Penny Publications, the leading publisher of puzzle magazines in North America, has signed a new agreement with Comag Marketing Group LLC (CMG) for the continued sale, marketing and distribution of all of its titles – under both the Penny Press and Dell Magazine brands – in the United States, Canada and abroad. The agreement was announced jointly by Peter Kanter, President of Penny Publications, and Michael L. Sullivan, President and Chief Executive Officer of CMG.In making the announcement, Kanter said, “We are delighted to have renewed our distribution agreement with Comag. We value Comag’s far-sighted vision for the business and its resources and commitment to getting the right things done. They show integrity in all that they do, and they add value at every step of the newsstand sales chain. We are pleased and proud to be growing our business with them.”

Sullivan of CMG said, “We are very pleased that our longstanding business relationship with Penny Publications has been extended well into the future. It is nice to work with such a knowledgeable group of people who understand their product line so well and know how to best market their titles through sound category management principles. We are glad that CMG and Penny Publications will have the opportunity to work together for years to come.”

About Penny Publications:

Penny Publications is the family-owned parent company of Penny Press and Dell Magazines, which, together, publish more than 80 puzzle magazines and books, featuring crosswords, sudoku, word seek, variety, fill-in and logic-type puzzles. Titles include Penny’s Finest Word Seek’s, Original Sudoku, Family Favorites, Dell’s Best Easy Crosswords, Family Variety Puzzles & Games, Original Logic Problems, Dell Crossword Puzzles, Official Crossword Puzzles and Pocket Crossword Puzzles, the last three of which have been published continuously for more than 60 years. The company is named after Penny Kanter, who acquired a struggling crossword-magazine business with her husband, Bill, in 1973, and reinvigorated its editorial, product design and business practices. In 1996, after dramatic growth and expansion of the Penny Press line, the company acquired Dell Magazines, whose founder, George T. Delacorte, Jr., introduced puzzle magazines to the marketplace in 1921. Today, Penny Press and Dell Magazines continue to delight puzzle enthusiasts as leaders in the puzzle magazine category.

- Asda’s demands include a request for two pages of editorial or advertising space each month in titles of the company’s choosing.

- Another is that shop space given over to a distributor’s titles will be subject to a “space contribution” of £10,000 paid to the supermarket.

- Asda is asking for a space contribution for each new Asda store opened of £2,500 per magazine title to be paid to the supermarket.

With the price of gas increasing weekly, magazines are facing steeper-then-usual sales declines. Particularly, men’s titles and news magazines are down the most, though categories across the board show declines. To combat this decline, some different options are being thrown around. Some titles have the opportunity of hiking up cover prices. For others, with the average cover price now at $4.53, that’s not an option. Due to rising cover prices, celebrity magazine dollar sales are actually up. Another possible way to fight declines is to offer coupons for newsstand copies on their covers or in circulars, which in the past has not been done. One source says, “Retailers would like to see magazines adopt more consumer packaged goods-type promotions.” MediaWeek (June 30, 2008)

According to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on May 9, Source Interlink Distribution, LLC, claims that Time Warner Retail has breached contract, is taking part in discriminatory and retaliatory business practices, has promoted unfair competition, and is interfering with existing retailer customers. The suit claims that Time Warner Retail broke an agreement in 2001 by selling to thirds parties the delivery, sales and return data related to Chas. Levy Circulation Company. Levy was acquired by Source in 2005. Source is also claiming that Time Warner Retail’s pricing policy is forcing the company to “operate at significantly lower margins” in high-cost markets, and that Time Warner is interfering with its retail customers by contacting retailers in an effort to force Source “into substantially devalued pricing deals.” Source vs. Time Warner Lawsuit [PDF] Folio (May 27, 2008)
