American Greetings Generates $100 Million a Year on the Web

June 18th, 2008

In an interview with The New York Times, American Greetings’ ceo Zev Weiss (pictured at left) sketched his company’s strategy for generating revenue on the web.  It starts with understanding their core customer, who “…says that an e-card is an important part of her overall social expression, but it’s not viewed as a replacement of a paper card.”  Still, American Greetings is satifying that new demand by offering subscription web services that allow customers to send e-cards or create and print customized cards.  They also sell “memory books” and, of course, advertising on their websites, too.  AGI-owned websites include BlueMountain.com, Americangreetings.com and social-networking site Kiwee.com.  In AGI’s latest earnings report — for the fiscal fourth quarter — the company announced a swing from a loss of $12.2 million to a profit of $15.6 million, pleasantly surprising analysts.  The New York Times  (June 14, 2008)
